Glenbard West Class of 1970 Gift
Circle Drive Bench: Installed January 2025
At our June 1970 commencement ceremony, Bill Roalman, our class President, presented to the Board of Education an unspecified class gift (called a “Memorial” in the commencement program). In the many years that have passed since then, however, no one seems to have a memory or a record as to what our class gift actually was.
So, as our reunion committee was starting to discuss our 55th reunion (September 26-27, 2025), and in conjunction with Glenbard’s 100th anniversary and its plan to spruce up the Circle Drive, the reunion committee decided that we could make a new class gift, one that would benefit the school and also give our class something to be proud of for years to come.
Working with Glenbard West’s administration, we selected a long-lasting, durable bench as an appropriate gift. We especially liked the fact that the bench is on the Circle Drive where it will be used by students and will also be readily visible to our classmates as they visit the campus from time to time.
The design of the bench was selected by the group in charge of the Circle Drive improvement. All the Class of ’70 had to do was to pay for it. So the reunion committee put out the call for donations. Thanks to the generosity of so many classmates, we raised more than the $2,000+ we needed for the bench and installation, with a surplus that will be applied to help finance our 55th reunion, which is well along in planning (save the dates of the Homecoming weekend of September 26-27, 2025).
It is not often that a class gets the chance to “redo” its class gift. But that has now occurred. See the accompanying photos of the Class of 1970 bench, which has been installed in a prominent location between the Circle Drive and the outer wall of the Elliott Library (the former Girls’ Gym). Thanks again to all who contributed to our 50th reunion class gift.
