Josie and I were very close friends and both of us were determined to finish high school early. We graduated in January of 1970 and went on to become nurse's aides at a nursing home. Josie was wonderful with the residents, especially a woman who didn't speak English, only Spanish. Josie spoke Spanish and would sing with her and explain procedures to her when she didn't understand what was happening. Josie had an amazing sense of humour and we shared loads of laughs. I remember listening to the Doors with her. We found each other a few years ago on Facebook and I was devastated when she passed away. She was a wonderful and incredibly intelligent person.

OBITUARY

Josie Lynn Falany

February 1, 1953 – September 14, 2015

Josie Lynn Falany of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away Monday, September 14, 2015. She was born in New York and grew up in Chicago, Illinois.

Josie had a long career as a research scientist, working alongside her husband, Dr. Charles N. Falany, most recently at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. She was devoted to her children, Marina Lynn Thompson, Charles Nathan Falany, and Curtis Robert Falany; and her six grandchildren.

Josie also had a love for creating, which embraced stained glass, making soap, and attempting any new endeavor that piqued her interest. She was brilliant at playing board games and competitive at any adventure, including climbing to Machu Picchu, Peru. Hiking, jogging, and staying in shape were an integral part of her daily life.

Service to Josie's church and its outreach became a solid focus after her retirement when her time was more flexible. She was a force of nature and could do anything from laying a tile floor or painting an apartment to planting a vegetable garden or cutting delicate shapes for an art piece. She will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to be part of her life.

Josie was preceded in death by her parents, Josephine and Robert Shute; son, Charles Nathan Falany; and her two brothers, Robert and Richard Shute. Survivors include Josie's husband, Charles; daughter, Marina; son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Amanda Earnest Falany; grandchildren, Hayley Lynn Thompson, Lauren Elizabeth Thompson, Nathan Bunyan Thompson, Jordan Claire Earnest, Easton Conner Falany, and Charlie Grace Falany; mother-in-law, Sylvia June Falany; and brother- and sister-in-law, Curtis Edward Falany and JoEllen H. Falany.
