Mike and I used to meet annually in South Bend for a Notre Dame game. He was a zealous ND fan, where his daughter attended school. I am a Buckeye fan but went along with the program once a year in order to preserve our friendship. In 2010, Mike informed me that he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer. I was mortified. He fought the disease with great courage and optimism for 5+ years before dying in March of 2016. I had lunch with him the week before he died and a tearful farewell. I knew Mike since we were 10 years old playing baseball at the old Main Street school and was honored to be able to deliver his eulogy. His passing reminded me how transitory our lives are. I miss my "wingman".
